Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia
Dixie's Best Kept Skiing Secret

By Ron Holland

Why would anyone go skiing or buy ski property way down South in West Virginia?

The Snow - Did you know that Snowshoe averages 30 more inches of snow annually than both Quebec's Mont Tremblant often described as the premier European style resort in North America and the same can be said for exotic Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada. Of the 17 downhill ski resorts in New Hampshire, only 3 get more snowfall than Snowshoe Mountain. Snowshoe actually averages more snow than downtown Denver, Salt Lake City and even Park City, Utah.

Accessibility - Snowshoe is within a day's drive for over 75 million people, a third of the population of the entire United States and the best ski mountain south of Vermont and New Hampshire. Although the last hour or so is on narrow mountain roads, the rest of the trip from most locations is by interstate highway.

The Best in Eastern Skiing - Great facilities, 1,500 vertical and ski trails over a mile long.

An Upside Down Ski Resort - The resort village is on the top of the mountain which means you get the long distance views, the coldest climate and best snow right outside the door of your hotel or condo.

Unique Micro Climate - Snowshoe was discovered back in the 1970's when an airline pilot discovered what he thought was a glacier in May in the West Virginia mountains. This led the way for skiers to discover what the old time loggers in the area already knew, this is a little bit of Canada surviving here below the Mason Dixon Line. For cold snowmaking temperatures, heavy natural snow and cool delightful summer temperatures, this area can't be beat.

Whistler Style Restaurants, Nightlife & Snow Play Activities - Believe it or not, the resort village has a real "western feel" and it is a Southern version of Canada's Whistler Ski Resort. Actually you can expect more rain at village level in Whistler than at Snowshoe Resort but there is really no ski resort better than Whistler in North America.

Why Should You Consider Owning Real Estate at Snowshoe Mountain Resort?
It is a simple fact of supply & demand. There is no question that some resort real estate prices are weakening in many resort areas across the United States. From Florida to the Atlantic and Gulf coasts demand is dropping as weary Southerners watch and wait to see what will unfold next hurricane season. Real estate prices are primarily a function of supply and demand. Golf Resorts and water related developments are everywhere in the South ranging from the coast, to lakeside resorts to beautiful cool, high mountain resorts in North Carolina and Virginia.

But where can you really ski and enjoy the complete "big mountain" ski resort destination experience in or near the South where hundreds of thousands of skiers live? You can certainly ski in Virginia and North Carolina where I live but to appreciate the full big mountain resort experience, Southerners have to drive to Vermont or New Hampshire or fly out West except for Snowshoe Mountain in "Almost Heaven" West Virginia.

Remember, the supply of accessible weekend ski resorts is very limited and the demand continues strong. I believe with global warming, increased hurricane activity and the growing heat island effect of crowded pavement and buildings in large metropolitan areas here in our Southern States will translate into more high mountain resorts becoming destination resorts even in the summer.

What Is Available?

Eight Rivers Condos - I had the opportunity to stay there on my last trip to Snowshoe in March of 2006. An affordable condo complex right on the ski slopes and in the middle of the village.

Soaring Eagle Lodge - At the highpoint of Snowshoe at the southern end of the resort close to the new ski terrain which should be open in a few years.
