Jesse FerrellCold Everywhere, But 0 With -50 Chill in NCSaturday, April 07, 2007This map illustrates how chilly it really was early this morning across the U.S. -- in the 30s or below in every state in the nation except Florida:
But what the map doesn't show is that, in the North Carolina mountains, they've dipped to zero degrees overnight. Check out this list of temperatures below 12 degrees.
Mount Mitchell, NC: 0.7 (Wind Chill: -50!)
Grandfather Mountain: 6.9 (Archived)
Beech Mountain: 6.2 (Archived)
Wolf Laurel: 9.3 (Archived)
Rich Mountain: 9.2 (Archived)
Burnsville, NC: 10.4
Linville, NC: 11.0
Sugar Moutnain: 11.6 (Archived)Technically, the Mount Mitchell reading of 0.7 F would have been the coldest temperature in the nation this morning, edging out Mount Washington, NH [JessePedia], who only fell to 1.5 or so.
NEAR ZERO ON MOUNT MITCHELL...
WITH SNOW ON THE CAM...Most of these readings didn't show up on the map above, or even on a map of low temperatures from MESOWEST (The Government Mesonet), because the stations are not connected to the national network. Thanks to Ronald for the tip and thanks to Ray's Weather Center who runs many of the stations above.
Mount Mitchell sported a wind chill reading of -50 F, and indeed even the networked stations that AccuWeather monitors indicated a -12 wind chill near Almond, NC this morning (WeatherMatrix Stats), the coldest spot in the nation, just barely edging out the general winner for worst weather, Mount Washington, NH [JessePedia], who, while in the single digits, had unusually calm winds this morning.
This cold weather is quite unusual for this time of year and stands in stark contrast to last week
Elliot AbramsExpert Senior MeteorologistSaturday Morning Update
Saturday, April 07, 2007Saturday 9:29 AM
The Middle Atlantic snow area has pretty much occurred where we have been suggesting it would, Even though the main storm is consolidating well offshore, the outer fringe of the snow can graze southeasternmost New England later this afternoon and evening. Meanwhile, with a strong and cold upper air trough coming through the Northeast, it can get unstable enough almost anywhere for snow showers to break out. Here is a picture of the 12Z sounding from Washington showing a moist and rather unstable airmass in place. Some drying will occur as the westerly flow increases, but daytime heating will occur as well, perhaps enough to trigger snow showers there and elsewhere in the Middle Atlantic region today. In most cases, there will be no accumulation during the day on paved areas.
In this video, I show the satellite picture sequence with composite radar overlay as it unfolded early this morning. As we have discussed before, the composite radar often makes it appear that precipitation is occurring in places where it is not actually reaching the ground. This is because the composite includes information from many atmospheric levels and from a variety of sites. For example, if the Dover Delaware radar "sees" precipitation well up in the sky (the radar beam goes straight while the earth curves, so the farther you are away from the radar, the more you see echoes exclusively from higher elevations) over southeastern Pennsylvania, that precipitation will show up on the radar composite map that is used as an overlay for the satellite picture.
In my middle of the night update below, I wrote about two very speculative snow possibilities 1-2 weeks away. Of more interest is a storm that will affect the Northeast in the middle of the coming week. This storm can bring late season snowfall from parts of Pennsylvania to central and northern New England.
In the video, I reveal (and show a picture of) the individual responsible for my extra burst of activity this morning!
